Major General O.P. Sabharwal comes from a family that has produced four generations of soldiers for the Indian Army over a period of 100 years. He himself was commissioned in the 1/3 Gurkha Rifles of the Indian Army in June 1955, and later volunteered for the Parachute Regiment.
He has taken active part in the counter insurgency operations in Northeast India - in Nagaland (1955-57) and the Mizo Hills (1966-68). One of the raids on a guerrilla stronghold in the Mizo Hills earned him the Sena Medal. He saw action in 1962 against China and in 1965 and 1971 against Pakistan. He was Mentioned-in-Despatches for gallantry in battle as commanding officer of 9 Para Commandos. Major General Sabharwal has also commanded 50 Independent Parachute Brigade and 6 Mountain Division.
