A notable figure in Anglo-Indian literature, Flora Annie Steel came to India in 1868, after being married to a member of Indian Civil Service. Touched and fascinated by every aspect of Indian life, she undertook the painstaking task of collecting folktales-- mainly in the form of sketchy, rhetorical narration-- by personally mingling with the local people. She gave a definite format to these tales, carefully retaining their rustic flavour.
