Surdas was a poet, saint and a musician and he was equally revered for his accomplishments in all these areas. He is believed to have been blind. He was very much immersed in the Bhakti movement that was sweeping India. This movement represented a grass roots spiritual empowerment of the masses. Surdas was a proponent of the Shuddhadvaita school of Vaishnavism. He is known for his magnum opus Sur Sagar which is said to have contained some 1,00,000 poems or songs of which only 8000 remain today.
