John Stuart Mill (1806) Scottish philosopher, economist and administrator, was born in Pentonville, where he also received education from his father. In 1823 his father's influence obtained for him a clerkship in the East India Company where he worked till 1858. In 1851 he got married to Harriet Taylor. It was largely through her influence that Mill wrote The Enfranchisement of Women, an extraordinary article for that time. In fact, Harriet was also involved in the writing of On Liberty. Between 1865-68, he served as an MP for Westminister. In the 1868 elections, he was defeated because he had publicly proclaimed that he did not believe in God.
