Francois Mauriac (1889-1970) was a French novelist, essayist, poet, dramatist and critic. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1952. He placed a soul grappling with the problem of sin, grace and salvation at the heart of each one of his works. His other works include The Silence of Colonel bramble (1918) and Whatever God May Be (1928).
