Though many books— academic and
historical—have been written about this amazing woman, Begum Sumroo remained just another
fleeting character in the
shadows of history till the
phenomenal success of the play Begum Sumroo by Partap Sharma.
The play is set in the late eighteenth century during the decline of the Mughal empire when India swarmed with a variety of European mercenary soldiers and adventurers who came to make their fortunes by taking part in the power-struggles that were going on.
