Ranajit Das was born in 1949 at Silchar, Assam and later moved to Kolkata to live and work there. A science graduate from Guwahati University, he joined the West Bengal Civil Service from which he voluntarily retired in 2007. A reputed poet in Bengali, Ranajit has seven volumes of poetry, two novels, an essay collection and a collection of selected poems to his credit. His books include Amader Lajuk Kabita (1977), Samay, Sabuj Daini (1987), Bandarer Kathyabhasha (1993), Ishwarer Chokh (1999), Shrestha Kabita (2002), Sandhyar Pagal (2004) and Samudra Sanglap (2007). His debut novel Biyogparva, and the collection of literary essays entitled Khonpar Phul Bishayak Prabandha have also been very well-received.
Ranajit received Birendra Chattopadhyay Smriti Puraskar for poetry from the Governmen
